SEATTLE -- Roger Ligrano could be our city's most well-known artist. Yet very few of us know his name...until now.
Go for a walk with Roger Ligrano anywhere near Seattle and you'll see his work here, there and everywhere.
Most of us don't go a day without seeing his art. A fish in Wallingford creates ambiance before you even walk in. A diver in Fremont plunges into the abyss, an eye blinks over Belltown...
Make no mistake, this is way more than advertising for Roger. In addition to just about every cool neon sign in Seattle, he is one of the few artists Dale Chihuly trusts to make...a Chihuly. Dale comes up with the concept, and Roger is often the guy who actually transforms the neon-filled glass into art.
It's a specialized skill few can master.
He's been at it since he was 15. His lifelong love affair with light took shape much earlier. It began with a sign he saw all the time as a boy in Ballard. He liked the colors, but most of all, he liked the light.
When we approach one of their signs that's been replaced?
“It's like somebody took part of me away. ‘Cuz I drive around and I'm like, wow that's gone, and times change. It just makes u realize nothing really lasts forever.”
But that doesn't mean Roger won't try.
