SPOKANE, Wash. — "A Dinosaur For Washington" is a new book about an 66-million-year-old mystery discovered on the shores of Sucia Island in the San Juans.
Spokane's Kelly Milner-Halls wrote "The True Story of Suciasaurus" because she's a life-long dinosaur geek.
“Most people outgrow it, apparently I didn't,” Milner-Halls said during a recent interview via Zoom.
The book follows the story of the fossil, found on a beach on Sucia, in 2010.
"It is part of a femur, part of the thigh bone of what turned out to be a Tyrannosaur," Milner-Halls said.
It was the first dinosaur fossil found in Washington.
“You know, the actual fossil is on display at the Burke Museum on the campus of the University of Washington, so you can go and see it there. But honestly, I don't want to seem like I'm plugging my book or anything, but it's the most complete version of the story," Milner-Halls said.
The story of Suciasaurus Rex – which became Washington’s Official State Dinosaur in 2023 - is millions of years in the making. But it never gets old. And this author has one thing she wants readers to take away from her book.
“I hope they realize that they can love dinosaurs, no matter how young or how old they are," Milner-Halls said. "They're always interesting even if you're a little bit older like me — 66 and I'm still lovin' dinos!"
