Plant pairings with Ciscoe Morris

Make peace in the veggie garden. #k5evening

SEATTLE — Seattle gardening expert Ciscoe Morris says that when it comes to veggie gardening it's important to think about how your starts will get along with each other.

"So it's time to plant spring veggies which is so exciting - but did you know that vegetables are like people, a lot of them really don't like each other, and others love each other," he said. "So we got to figure out which ones to put together!"

He started with some snap pea starts, which are a good choice for spring planting.

"I love these so much. So what do they love? They love salad greens, and they're crazy about spinach so we can plant either of those around them," Ciscoe said. "I've got some nice yummy lettuce and all peas and lettuce just love each other. I can stick some of this nice mustard in there, that'll do good."

Ciscoe warns there's another spring veggie peas do not get along with:

"Whatever you do, don't plant onions anywhere near peas, nothing in the onion family next to the pea or bean family. By not anything I mean chives, garlic, nothing like that. Because peas and onions hate each other. Neither of them do well if they're near each other," Ciscoe said.

Next he picked up a pack of carrot starts: "Carrots love everybody, you can grow them with any salad greens. Also, I hear the onions back there crying. Don't feel bad onions because carrots absolutely love you. If you grow carrots around your onions, onions repel carrot rust fly," he said.

Next is a veggie that Ciscoe calls the diva of the vegetable garden: "These are Brussels sprouts, now it's a little early to plant these but I'm gonna give it a try anyway, these guys don't like hardly anybody. They hate the salad greens. They're not that crazy about carrots. But they love onions!"

Ciscoe says there's one more plant to consider adding to your vegetable garden, and it's an herb. "Plant some lavender out there. The blue flowers are so attractive to bees, you'll get pollinators and so you're gonna get a lot more fruit on your veggies as summer goes along. Oh la la!"
