SEATTLE — Seattle’s newest holiday attraction transports visitors to a traditional German Christmas Market.
The Seattle Christmas Market at Seattle Center replicates the kind of markets founder Malte Kluetz remembers from his childhood.
"For me, it is important that I can bring people this cultural experience,” Kluetz said. “And I am really happy that it's finally here."
The 60 wooden huts stationed throughout the market are just like the ones you’d find in Europe, filled with vendors from around the world.
There’s also a focus on small local makers and restaurants. Visitors can buy socks made by a Lake Stevens native, homemade jams and beautiful cakes from West Seattle small businesses, and honey products from Maple Valley’s "Bees in the Burbs.”
Visitors can also ride a carousel, stroll beneath the mistletoe in an illuminated "Lovers Lane,” and grab raclette from the "gourmetstrasse" – the dining section of the market.
At the center of everything is the pyramid - a German wooden structure dating back centuries. Live music is performed on the second level, and piped out over speakers.
"We use (the lower level) to serve the most important drink which is Glühwein,” Kluetz said. “It’s a mulled wine with spices, perfect for this type of weather."
Last but not least, visitors can follow the large “willkommen” sign into a building where St. Nick waits to greet guests.
"Growing up with it was just so important,” Kluetz said. “You feel a little bit of Germany while you're in downtown Seattle."
Seattle Christmas Market is open daily until December 24. Timed tickets are available for purchase online, and guests are welcome to stay as long as they like.
