Seattle's newest sports bar features a wall of nearly 6,000 trading cards

Slim Goody in Ballard boasts 15 big screens and lots of light. #k5evening

SEATTLE — Ballard's Slim Goody has only been open since July, but it's already become a popular neighborhood hotspot.

"Something for everyone," said General Manager Jake Hoveland, one of 10 investors who pooled their resources to create the kind of place they always wanted to hang out, themselves.

"We got blessed with a very great space," he said. "We have many different rooms. Each room offers its own unique personality. The main bar has a 'U' shape, which is pretty unique."

The bar's most striking feature may be a wall of about 6,000 sports cards. All of them were collected by the business's partners, including 4,000 cards donated by a single collector.

The owners' goal was to create a comfortable setting with a lot more light than a typical sports bar. There are windows and skylights throughout.

"A little bit of a different style here. We have more of an airy, open flow to the place," Hoveland said. "And a lot of TVs. We have 15 total TVs up on the wall."

The menu is short and sweet, offering a few classic items made well.

"We're going with an upscale bar food concept," Hoveland said. "There's a little bit of Midwest roots and ties to that."

One highlight is the brunch sandwich known as the "Weekender," a smashburger placed atop a bed of fries, topped with fried Beecher's cheese curds and an egg.

"Really excited to have a place that's open, airy, and fun. And you can still not necessarily be a sports fan but enjoy that environment," said Hoveland. "[We] Wanted to create a really cool experience for the Ballard community."

Slim Goody is located at 5411 Ballard Avenue NW in Seattle. It's open seven days a week.
