NEW YORK — Live from New York it's "A Closer Look"?
"I think the fun part for us is, anytime we get taken out of our comfort zone, I think we rise to the occasion," said Seth Meyers, the host of NBC's 'Late Night' program.
For one night only, Meyers is bringing his show's most popular segment, the political commentary segment called 'A Closer Look,' to prime time for a day-after recap of the presidential debate.
"We're in a position where we can talk about, one, what happened on the debate stage, and two, the bounce from the media, the spin from the campaigns. There's gonna be a lot for us to break up and put in different acts of the show," he said.
It'll be broadcast live, which makes him a little nervous.
"Like, anticipation-slash-dread," he joked.
That's even after his previous stint as a "Saturday Night Live" cast member.
"My years at SNL, you never get used to live," Meyers said, "And it's so funny, because ultimately when we do our show we're not making a ton of edits. It feels basically live. But, of course, we don't have that luxury (on the live special) and your body knows that, and so the butterflies kick in and you just hope you can make it through."
"A Closer Look" actually reached its stride during the 2016 campaign.
"And then became a thing that we just got really good feedback on it. People liked it," Meyers said, "People liked watching it when it aired. People liked watching it online the next day."
The carefully researched segments explore politics through humor.
Meyers said, "The fun thing about doing it is the comedy people have learned to have a lot of appreciation for what the researchers do. And I'm also gonna say I think the researchers have gotten a little bit funnier."
The live prime time special won't be the usual show in the usual time slot for Seth Meyers. And he's just fine with that.
"You need every now and then something to sort of shake things up a little bit," Meyers said.
"A Closer Look with Seth Meyers: Primetime LIVE Election Special" airs 10:00 p.m. Wednesday on KING 5.
