Talk about your growth spurts! Sunflowers are drawing crowds in a field near you

Where to celebrate these golden giants all across the Snoqualmie Valley #k5evening

DUVALL, Wash. — They're the tallest members of the Daisy family, almost always facing east. And until this day Daniel thought sunflowers were his friend.

"I don't know where to go," he said as he wandered down a path surrounded by sunflowers. "And I feel like the lostest person in the maze ever."

"We're both lost," his mom Molly laughed.

They have come all the way from Bellevue just to lose themselves in a field of bright yellow giants. This is Lora Lee's A-Maze-Zing Sunflowers, a three-year-old attraction drawing thousands of visitors to Lora Lee's Family Farm. Lora's husband Ed Wicks manages the farm with her and is responsible for this year's maze.

"Some people think it's a little hard this year so we've gotten some people lost," she laughed.

Daniel and his mom are still looking for a way out.

"They're like flowers everywhere," he said. "I like looking at them too. But the green ones? They freak me out and give me the creeps."

The green ones have yet to bud. The rest of the field is at peak condition and there are more fields with larger sunflowers on the other side of the farm. Most of the visitors have come for the views, the photo opportunities and to make golden memories in fields of bumblebee yellow.

"I just think it makes people happy after the long hot summer," Ed Wicks said.

"Our visitors absolutely love it, Lora said. "They are totally amazed. We have a few skeptics but when they come back they're like 'Totally amazing! Well worth a visit! Well worth the price!'"

And for those, like Daniel and Molly, who find their way out of the maze, well worth the stories they can share back home.

"It's actually pretty beautiful," Daniel said.

Lora Lee's Family Farm is just one of the many farms between Carnation and Monroe taking part in the first annual Snoqualmie Valley Sunflower Festival. This Saturday, there will be a big celebration at Tolt Commons in Carnation.
