ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. -- Eastsound is the 'big city' on Orcas, and Brown Bear Baking is the place for pastries. They're artisanal, baked on site - and the reason why the line is often out the door.
A couple blocks away, there's another new hot spot - called "The Barnacle."
One of Washington's most eclectic bars.
"The spirit of it is like a strange mystic traveler who settled down on the island and collects a lot of weird stuff and loves strange alcohol, and then somehow figured out how to put it all together," said Jared Lovejoy, The Barnacle's owner, who moved here from Seattle.
The Barnacle blends city and island life.
Lightbulbs are strung through fishing ropes... the bar is reclaimed wood... and they serve innovative craft cocktails, like a house Sasparilla Manhattan, alongside fancy Shirley Temples. This is a family friendly establishment:
"In Washington State, as long as you have a rail, and adults are here, then families can be on the other side," explained Lovejoy.
Which makes The Barnacle an ideal end-of-the-day gathering spot... for everyone on Orcas Island.
