TACOMA, Wash. — The inner turmoil behind the stiff upper lip. For seven years Netflix's "The Crown" has entertained us by guessing what the British Royals were really feeling
"'The Crown' is very strongly rooted in the facts but what we don't know is what people say behind doors and what people think," said Dominic West, who played Prince Charles. "I think it takes a very good dramatist to do that in a convincing way."
Now series creator Peter Morgan and his team are wrapping things up with six final episodes centered on the Queen herself.
"It's emotional," said Imelda Staunton who plays Queen Elizabeth. "It's real. It's difficult. There's conflict. There's friendship. There's all the stuff that you want to mine for everything that it is worth."
The actors playing the younger generation of royals said every day was a great learning experience. Ed McVey recalls some advice from Staunton.
"She is like the definition of professionalism and I think you're job is be brilliant from 'Action' til 'Cut'. That's your moment. So you can't be expelling unwanted energy to people please which is sort of my go-to, I think."
The show's completion means all of the actors have had to vacate their royal surroundings.
"The set design is so astonishing," our own Saint Bryan said to Staunton and Lesley Manville. "Were there ever moments when you thought I could really live like this or I could never live like this?"
The women laughed.
"We visited a lot of stately homes," Manville said.
"I could live in any of them," added Staunton. "I wouldn't want to clean them but I'd love to live there."
We're wrapping up this story by asking what souvenirs cast members wanted most.
"A corgi," answered McVey immediately.
"Great answer!" added Meg Bellamy who plays Kate.
"I think you'll probably change your answer," Luther Ford suggested. "We have these bangles that we would wear all the time."
"We wanted them but they were rented," McVey said.
"God I only get one!" exclaimed West. "The Aston Martin I think must be the one. I did try to take his cufflinks which had this beautiful crest. And they stopped me, caught me red-handed, and I had to give them back so all I got was a tea towel with my face on it."
The final season of "The Crown" is nominated for 4 Golden Globes and 3 Critics Choice Awards.
