SEATTLE — New movie “Twisters” is a crowd-pleaser for audiences who like to be swept up and carried away with high stakes action.
It’s not officially a sequel to 1996’s cult classic “Twister,” but it does offer a new and updated spin on storm chasers.
The story centers on Kate, a scientist who's traumatized after surviving a deadly tornado but gets lured back to Oklahoma in hopes of “taming” them. There, she meets Tyler – a self-described “tornado wrangler” who chases storms in his tricked-out truck for YouTube clicks.
Entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb talked to stars Glen Powell (Tyler) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kate.)
HOLCOMB: "Being a tornado wrangler, there is a vehicle that is sort of intrinsic in that. I'm curious what your cars indicate that you guys are good at wrangling, in real life?"
EDGAR-JONES: "I mean I drive a Mini, a little Mini, electric Mini."
HOLCOMB: "So you're good at wrangling one friend for short distances?”
EDGAR-JONES: “Yeah, short distances near chargers.”
POWELL: “It's not even good for wrangling groceries, it's not even big enough for that. It's good at wrangling a parking spot, that's probably it. (laughter)”
HOLCOMB: “Glen, how about you?”
POWELL: “I actually drive a Ram Truck, so my vehicle's not dissimilar.”
EDGAR-JONES: “You were born to wrangle.”
POWELL: “I was born to wrangle. I actually didn't even know they were filming. I just showed up."
EDGAR-JONES: "You always say, 'If you feel it, chase it.' (laughter)”
HOLCOMB: “You have that tattoo on your arm, right?”
POWELL: “You know what? I ran into someone last night as we were leaving the premiere here in Oklahoma who had Tyler's storm chasing truck tattooed on her forearm!”
HOLCOMB: “What?!"
POWELL: “Yeah, we took a picture!”
HOLCOMB: "I live in Seattle so I really enjoy the rain, which I know people think is odd. I'm curious what you love, whether it be a weather pattern or maybe just something in nature that other people think is weird?"
EDGAR-JONES: "I'm with you with the rain, I'm from London so rain is something I'm accustomed to. And I like sleet."
POWELL: "I enjoy hail. When I was growing up in Texas, hail is sort of a thing that happens a lot - but I will say with the storm chasers around here, they're all so proud of their hail dents in their truck, which I appreciated."
HOLCOMB: "Did you take anything away from this experience that could be an applicable skill in your real life?"
POWELL: "A lot of great driving. I do want to point out that one of the scariest drives I've had in Oklahoma was not in my truck, it was driving with Daisy to a Christmas store…”
EDGAR-JONES: “We came back at Christmas time and I wanted to get some Christmas baubles. But I'd forgotten how to drive on that side of the road so I took Glen on the highway and it was hairy. But anyway, we made it."
HOLCOMB: "How big a bucket of popcorn do you recommend people get to see this film?”
EDGAR-JONES: “I mean, as big as you can. This feels like a classic blockbuster in the best kind of way. It's shot on film, it's meant to be experienced on a big screen, with as many people as possible."
POWELL: “And it's also a very intense movie, so at the London premiere I was stress-eating popcorn."
EDGAR-JONES: "Yeah, and a bit of jump scares - popcorn everywhere!"
“Twisters” is rated PG-13 and is now playing.
