PARKLAND, Wash. — With a saxophone player walking from table to table performing soul standards, Velvet's Big Easy in Parkland is a restaurant that sounds like no other. And that's just the way owner/chef Brenda Miller wants it.
"It just make this place come alive," she said. "People are singing along. They're happy. They're engaged. It just makes them feel at home."
Home cooking, New Orleans style. That's what Louisiana native Miller delivers from a kitchen fueled by family recipes.
"It makes me very proud to know that I can share my family with my new family!" she said.
From this kitchen you can order up an authentic plate of shrimp gumbo. You can try Miller's seven cheese mac and cheese and get yourself a shrimp po-boy.
"I'm gonna make sure you get a shrimp in every bite," Miller said.
Or Miller's favorite: red beans and rice.
"After all these years I eat it every day," she said. "Every day."
Dishes Miller grew up cooking among a family of cooks
"I remember the first time I ever tried to cook anything I probably was about 5," she said. "I couldn't even see on top of the stove."
After years as a quality manager for Boeing, Miller is living her dream in a restaurant named after a favorite aunt's greeting.
"She would always tell me she loved me with navy blue passion and as smooth as velvet," Miller said.
Good music. Good food. At Velvet's Big Easy, everyone feels like family.
Velvet's Big Easy is open for lunch and dinner every day of the week except Sunday and Monday. Live music is featured every alternating Friday and Saturday night.
