In an effort to help create thriving communities for all ages, AARP's Community Challenge Grant program helps provide funding to organizations that are working to better the lives of those living in their communities, whether through transportation options, beautifying or creating public spaces, or increasing accessibility to housing.
This year they are selecting 129 organizations to receive a portion of over $1.3 million, with two of the grants going to deserving projects located in Washington State. Seattle Neighborhood Greenways' HomeZone neighborhood traffic calming project is helping residents of North Seattle feel safer while walking, biking, and socializing on their streets by installing self-watering planter boxes that restrict car access to busy streets, wayfinding signs, and art. Kitsap County's Homes for All project also received funding from AARP to provide a community kitchen area and multi-purpose room for those living in a local tiny home village as they transition out of homelessness.
