The PSE Green Power Program offers more options for renewable energy

The PSE Green Power team is dedicated to finding power-generator projects, where your donations can help fund clean energy.

Clean energy is an important investment for the future. Puget Sound Energy is making renewable energy easier with their Green Power Program. This team finds power generator projects where you can donate to cleaner energy. Tyler O'Farrell, PSE Program Manager for Renewable Energy Programs and Christine Hoffmann, PSE Outreach Manager, joined New Day to discuss the projects.

"With our Green Power Program, it allows [customers] to match a portion or all of their electricity with renewable energy that's been produced in the Pacific Northwest," O'Farrell said.

Some examples of renewable energy that are harnessed by PSE are dairy methane as well as wind and solar. These resources have dramatically lower pollution rates than fossil fuels and are naturally replenishing.

"It's a voluntary program, any customer can participate," O'Farrell said. "It is simply added to their bill on their monthly statement, and they are then sourcing their electricity from renewable resources all across the Pacific Northwest."

Hoffman explained the importance of the Powerful Partner Program and how PSE gives back through it.

"This year, we partnered with 24 great non-profits across our service area," she said. "We were able to work with them to get the word out about ways they can reduce their carbon footprint and lower their energy usage."

According to Hoffman, ten of the non-profits opted into the Green Power Promotion. This means that a customer who signs up for the program can designate one of the non-profits to receive a donation on their behalf from PSE.

"We have about fifty thousand customers currently participating in this program," said O'Farrell. "We have a Top 10 program out of about 900 utilities in the country that are currently offering a program similar to this. So, it's just an easy way for a customer who says 'I support renewable energy, I want more renewable energy, this is something that's important to me' and we want to make sure we provide our customers with that opportunity to support that."

O'Farrell added that customers looking to opt in don't have to change any of their equipment or install anything.

"This allows just a simple apartment owner or you know, a single homeowner to go out and say, 'you know what, this is important to me and I want to make sure I have a powerful impact as well.'"
