Tom Hardy did Mad Max stunts despite fear of heights

The actor performed most of his own stunts in the action film, which opens in theaters May 15.

LOS ANGELES - Mad Max Fury Road spends two hours denying audiences the chance to catch their breath.

Much of that is thanks to the work of star Tom Hardy and his stunt double, Jacob Tomuri.

"Was there a time when you were on set and you were like, 'I'm sorry, you want me to do what?'" asked entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb.

"Most days, actually," Tomuri replied. "Each day was a challenge but exhilarating at the same time."

"Was there anything (Jacob) got to do that you were a little jealous that you didn't get to try?" Holcomb asked Hardy.

"There was nothing to be jealous of!" Hardy laughed. "The worst thing to hear was, 'Tommy, you can do this one!' Surely not, you don't need me. I just pull faces and can say things occasionally."

"He's afraid of heights so we'd try to put him up there as high as possible," Tomuri joked.

"That's your fear, heights?" Holcomb asked.

"Well it's one of them, I have a lot of fears," Hardy said. "But no, I don't like heights much and that wasn't helpful. So yeah, they put me up on the pole."

In addition to defying gravity on flexible poles, he also agreed to be strapped to the front of a moving car.

"I think you want to see your actors as close to danger as possible because that makes a better shot," Hardy said. "And if you're not using CGI then obviously, you've got to find a way of doing that."

Hardy convincingly bring the "fury" to Mad Max. But in real life, he has a huge soft spot for dogs. The love affair was recently featured in Vanity Fair.

Hardy said he doesn't mind becoming a de facto spokeman for rescue pups.

"For me, I've always been closest to the dog I think because I didn't grow up around horses. I come from London and it's like, you can't really keep an elephant as easily as you can a dog," he said. "And there's something about the dog which is full of heart, it's loyal, and no matter what you do to it, it will always love you."

Mad Max Fury Road is rated R and opens in theaters May 15.
