MALAHAT, BC — It's a tower in the trees - with a view of two countries and infinite natural beauty.
The Malahat Skywalk is Canada's newest attraction.
And even though the border is closed, it already has fans in the United States.
Ken Bailey, the Malahat Skywalks General Manager, explains:
"We have somebody in our email base that emails us from Washington state that can actually see us."
The person who wrote lives in the San Juans, and they sent the Skywalk people proof that it’s visible from the states: “They have sent us photos, from their telephoto lens, where they're looking at our tower from their deck. Which is really cool!”
Construction on the 15 million dollar - Canadian - project began in January 2020.
It's slated to open in mid-July.
The 10-story tower is a 35-minute drive north of Victoria BC. Visitors will access it via an elevated forest walkway - then climb to the top along a spiral ramp that's accessible to all.
“We wanted to make sure that the entire experience was open to the whole family, regardless of age, or ability,” said Bailey.
At the top - three hundred- and sixty-degree views - you can see America from here! When completed, there will be adventure netting so that people can walk on thin air. And when it’s time to get down, there's a choice:
“There are two different ways to get down -you can come down on the same ramp you went up, or you can come down on the 60 foot, 20 meter slide,” said Bailey.
This one-of-a-kind tower is being called 'The Ultimate High', but will also ground anyone seeking natural beauty.
"One of our key missions is to make nature more accessible to people.”
When the U.S. border with Canada re-opens, the Malahat Skywalk will be a perfect way to get reacquainted with our neighbor to the north.
"The message that I'd like to say to our friends in the U.S. is we can't wait to welcome you back. We look forward to having you visit soon,” said Bailey.
