PORTLAND – A historic building has been transformed into a new center for good eating in Portland.
The Pine Street Market is open, with about half of the eight food providers open before a grand opening this weekend.
The building at Southwest 2nd Avenue and Pine Street was built in 1886 and used as a horse and carriage station long ago.
Now the 10,000 square foot first floor is home to a European-style food hall. From tapas and rotisserie chicken, to croissants, to pizza to Asian-themed food to Olympia Provisions hot dogs to Salt & Straw ice cream, it’s a community of some of Portland’s best restaurants and brands.
“We’re so thrilled to be in the market. This concept is just so true to our hearts, it feels very Spanish, it feels like a European market,” said Renee Gorham, partner in Pollo Bravo, part of the Toro Bravo dynasty.
For Salt & Straw, it’s a chance to try something new: Soft serve ice cream!
“We were really inspired, it was almost like an incubator model and, so we thought what can we do that would be new and innovative along those lines and we’re really honored to be part of this group,” said owner Kim Malek.
The grand opening is this coming Saturday, when most of the businesses should be open and ready to go. For now, the soft opening seems to be a hit.
“I kind of like the community feel of the seating area and lots of restaurants that we’re familiar with so we know that they’re good,” said a woman waiting in line for a slice of pizza from Trifecta Annex.
