World Chocolate Day: Seattle's Intrigue Chocolate Co. shares 'science and joy' of the decadent treat

U.S. chocolate exports near $2 billion mark annually. A Seattle company reflects on 19 years in the chocolate business.

SEATTLE — It started out as "something fun" to try, but quickly turned into a passion.

Chef Aaron Barthel was a farmer and botanist before moving into culinary arts. He describes his path to launching Intrigue Chocolate Co., as an exploration.

He began as a chocolatier in 2005, focusing on infusing a world of flavor into simple ganache truffles.

Intrigue Chocolate Co., has come a long way offering small batch craft chocolate, dozens of flavors of chocolate bars as well as the makings for chocolate beverages.

Barthel runs the company with business partner and co-owner, Karl Mueller.

The storefront is located on South Jackson Street in Seattle's Pioneer Square.
