It was a weekend matinee Adam Huffman and his fiance will never forget.
Adam and Merritt Wilkinson, his girlfriend of nearly seven years, went to see Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at Graham Cinema in North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
This showing had a surprise ending for Merritt. Adam was going to propose to her through a special video message he arranged to come up on screen after the movie.
"We'd been going to the Marvel superhero movies and they sometimes play a clip after the credits," Adam said. "I told her I heard there was something after the credits so that kept her in her seat."
At the end of the credits, Adam appears on the screen and shows a series of pictures from throughout their relationship, which started in high school.
"When I think about us, I wonder 'What if'?"
"What if I had never moved to Burlington?"
"What if I had never asked my friend who that beautiful girl was at the Williams game?"
"What if I hadn't texted Kendall asking what you thought about me?"
"What if your dad had said no when I asked him to marry you?" (Her dad said 'yes, but...I have a few questions')
And, finally, "What if right now in this movie theater, I got down on one knee and I asked."
Adam proposed to Merritt and was met with cheers from family and close friends in the balcony. Adam said Merritt was shocked and had no idea he was going to propose.
"I wanted to do something where we could ride by and point out to our kids that's where we got engaged," Adam said. "We like going to the movies a lot and I thought she wouldn't be tipped off by it."
