Fans flock to First Avenue to honor Prince

Hundreds of people stood outside First Avenue Thursday night for an impromptu block party celebrating Prince’s life.

MINNEAPOLIS - Hundreds of people stood outside First Avenue Thursday night for an impromptu block party celebrating Prince’s life.

The Current radio station organized the concert where several local musicians sang some of Prince’s greatest hits.

Earlier in the day, hundreds passed by the popular night spot that Prince made famous.

"Look at the people man, he was loved around here,” said Jason Span, of Minneapolis, who laid flowers outside of First Avenue. “He was a hometown guy.”

He was not the only one. Many left flowers and took pictures of Prince’s star painted next to many other artists who played at First Ave.

"He’s the first concert I’ve ever been to,” said Kendal Shomsak, of Savage. “It’s just very sad.”

It wasn’t just fans, but friends who took time to remember the musical icon.

"I didn’t expect this, I don’t think anyone did,” said Dustin Meyer, also known as DJ Dudley D.

Meyer was friends with Prince who toured and recorded with him for the past 15 years.

"He changed music. When he first started he changed music, he put his own twist on it and gave Minneapolis a sound of its own,” he said.

Despite knowing Prince so long, he said he said doesn't even have a picture with him. He says Prince didn't like taking pictures. Meyer however, does have lots of memories.

"My relationship with him was always fun. We were always at the party together,” he said.

And a party is how people in Minneapolis chose to remember Prince Thursday night as his songs echoed in the city streets.

"People still care, and care a great deal. He’s one of ours,” said Adam Grim, of Savage.
