AAA's GIG Car Share to shut down in December

AAA said operations will cease on Dec. 27 after demand challenges and changes in how people commute.

SEATTLE — AAA's GIG Car Share will cease operations this December it said in a letter sent to members.

Gig was founded in 2017 and came to Seattle in 2020. According to its website, the company had a fleet of 400 hybrid vehicles in Seattle alone. The program also operated in the San Fransico Bay area.

Customers could use an app to unlock the vehicles and make trips. Gig also had an agreement with the City of Seattle for free parking and a designated parking area at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Gig offered per-minute, per-hour, or day rates.

AAA said operations will cease on Dec. 27 after "challenges — primarily around decreased demand, rising operational costs, and changes to consumer commuting patterns."

Members have until Dec. 27 to use any of their remaining Gig credits.
