Skateworld Tacoma announces 'unexpected closure' in late March

Skateworld Tacoma said Wednesday the abrupt decision was made by the landlord not to extend the lease.

TACOMA, Wash. — Skateworld Tacoma announced Wednesday the "unexpected closure" of its current location at the end of March.

The facility will close on or around March 31, according to a Facebook post. The business said the "abrupt" decision was made by the landlord not to extend the lease because of a desire to use the space for a personal business venture for one of the owners.

According to the post, Skateworld Tacoma is exploring alternative locations within Tacoma and surrounding areas.

"We at Skateworld Tacoma express deep gratitude to the local skating community for their unwavering support throughout the years," the business posted on Facebook. "Our commitment to delivering a family-friendly environment and fostering community engagement remains steadfast."

Skateworld Tacoma said patrons can support the rink through its closure by attending sessions, booking parties, enrolling in Skate School and shopping at their sister store Fritzy's Roller Skate Shop. Skateworld's website will have more information on the closure timeline and plans for relocation.

Dockyard Roller Derby said on Thursday they were "devastated" to hear of Skateworld's imminent closure.

"We are devastated to hear that Skateworld Tacoma will be closing their doors soon," Dockyard Roller Derby posted on Facebook. "This is heavy news for the Tacoma roller derby and roller sports community. Dockyard has called this rink home for years, even through ownership and name changes. We are sad to be losing our practice space, but we are doing our best to remain optimistic in finding another facility.

"We are hoping that with our help, Tacoma can find a solution to keep roller skating and roller sports an integral part of our community. We would like to share our deepest appreciations to Skateworld Tacoma for allowing us to practice at their beautiful rink. This has made it possible for us to progress as athletes and grow our league. We thank you from the bottom of our derby hearts. Please support this wonderful business while you still can!"
