Seattle-based wine club brings global women winemakers together

A pandemic-born wine club business visits vineyards and reviews operations before adding their wines to the lineup.

SEATTLE — After receiving six pallets of imported wine just before the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown began, Marilee Bramhall was at a crossroads. The Seattle-based wine wholesaler said it was time to finally take a chance on something she always wanted to do.

Instead of cutting any losses, Bramhall launched Iola Wines, a subscription-based wine club that she said is more like a "personal wine importer" connecting you with the leading female producers in the most recognized regions of France and Italy.

Bramhall said it's important to see vineyard operation before any wines are added to the club to ensure the grapes are organically grown and wines are naturally made.

Iola Wines is named in honor of Bramhall's grandmother, Iola Ryerson Bramhall, who grew up in the Great Depression and loved opera and ballet as much as she did a good party.

Bramhall said it's rare for European vineyards to be run by women - largely in part because if one is being handed down within a family, it's typically handed down to a male family member.
