Shopping locally in Washington: Could Small Business Saturday edge out Black Friday?

Made in Washington previews 2023 holiday gifts as a Bankrate survey reveals shoppers may be more likely to shop Small Business Saturday than Black Friday.

SEATTLE — Whether shopping online or in person - about three-quarters of consumers plan to shop at a small business this holiday season, according to a new Bankrate survey.

The survey revealed more than 60 percent of holiday shoppers say they’re likely to shop on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25, this year, while 56 percent will be out and about on Black Friday. Cyber Monday is expected to top all shopping with two-thirds of people likely to shop then.

Seventy-two percent of shoppers are planning to shop with a small business this year which is up from 65 percent last year, according to the survey.

The majority of those surveyed said small businesses provided a better experience than large stores for certain shopping needs such as unique gift ideas and customer service.

Washington state is home to numerous entrepreneurs, brands and small businesses.

Every day, Made in Washington (MIW) encourages consumers to support local businesses with an additional push during the holiday shopping season.

MIW president and CEO Kristin Frossmo joined KING 5 Saturday morning to share her own top holiday gift list in celebration of Small Business Saturday.

Whenever you are gifting, Frossmo said there is an opportunity to support small businesses in the state.

Frossmo recommended a Pamper Her & Pamper Him gift set that includes items from Handmade La Conner, Seattle Candle Company, Jonboy Caramels, Estrella Soap, and Porter Lane Home.

MIW's pick - For the Baker Gift Set - is one that Frossmo said is perfect for the baker in your life. It includes items from Porter Lane Home, Hasan Creates, Honest Biscuits, and Belle Epicurean.

The Cocktail Hour Gift Set is another pick for this year's gift-giving season stocked with products from Girl Meets Dirt, Alpenglow Cocktail Company, BobbySue's Nuts, and Porter Lane Home. If your loved one on your gift list loves seafood, Frossmo recommends the Seafood Lover Gift Set which includes king salmon, creamy clam chowder, lemon pepper oysters, fish jerky, and a crab cake mix for your next fishcakes or boils. Products included are by SeaBear, Neptune, Tom Douglas, and Ekone.

Lastly, Frossmo said Devine Flame Candles make a good gift for someone who wants a unique at-home aromatherapy experience. Frossmo said the candles are made with organic coconut wax and are 100 percent vegan and phthalate-free.
