Valentine's Day spending estimated to hit $25.8 billion, Made in Washington encourages local purchases for sweethearts

Buying some, or all of your Valentine's treats and gifts locally could make a major impact on small businesses and brands, according to Made in Washington.

SEATTLE — Valentine's Day 2024 is expected to have a focus on spending on significant others, according to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

The annual survey revealed that total spending on significant others for the holiday is expected to reach a record $14.2 billion and that overall, consumers plan to spend a total of $25.8 billion to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Shifting some of those dollars from bigger brand names or out-of-state shops and online stores - could make a major impact on Washington's local economy, according to Made in Washington (MIW).

The NRF survey found the spending records are expected for jewelry ($6.4 billion), flowers ($2.6 billion), clothing ($3 billion) and an evening out ($4.9 billion).

Fifty-seven percent of consumers are expected to buy candy for their sweethearts.

MIW stopped by the KING 5 studios with recommendations on local candy options, candles, pottery, and more.
