TACOMA, Wash. — Several businesses along Pacific Avenue in Tacoma were still without power Monday, two days after a fatal car crash that damaged the electrical system for UW Tacoma's campus.
The crash at South 21st Street and Pacific Avenue on the morning of July 6 caused a near campus-wide outage, according to information from University of Washington. There is no estimated day or time for power to be restored.
In-person operations were suspended between July 8-13 due to the HVAC system being out and the forecast calling for high temperatures throughout the week. The Pantry and Cupboard are also temporarily closed. UW Tacoma students can find off-campus resources here.
UW Tacoma controls the power for that street.
The outage is impacting other businesses on campus.
On Monday, Stocklist Goods & Gifts was racing to save its chocolate products to try and ensure it wasn't all lost during the heatwave.
"I mean, it's frustrating ... we're so small that it's alarming, it's concerning if we don't make our projected sales each week," said owner Liz Van Dyke.
In a statement, UW Tacoma acknowledged the frustration caused by the outage, noting business tenants on Pacific Avenue have been kept informed.
Just after 7:30 a.m. on July 6, the Tacoma Police Department posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the single-vehicle crash that occurred a block west of the state Route 509/Interstate 705 interchange and south of the Washington State History Museum.
The crash was cleared before 2 p.m.
