SEATTLE — Thirty-five different ZIP codes in the Seattle area were among the Wealthy 1000 in a list compiled by The Business Journal.
The 98101, which includes Pike Place Market and a good portion of the Seattle waterfront, is the region's wealthiest and comes in at No. 51 in the country.
The Business Journal's Wealthiest 1000 uses a weighted formula that looks at several different wealth metrics, including per capita income, typical home value, poverty rate, land area and population.
Four different Seattle ZIP codes were among the 100 wealthiest on the list, and the first non-Seattle ZIP code to make the list was 98039 in Medina, which is the 134th-wealthiest ZIP.
98020 in Edmonds is the first state ZIP code outside of King County to crack the list, coming in at No. 232. Other eastside cities like Kirkland, Bellevue, Sammamish, Redmond and Issaquah also were among the top 500 wealthiest per the Business Journal.
Woodinville, Bainbridge Island, Fox Island, Point Roberts and Snoqualmie also cracked the top 1000.
The Business Journal says it gathered the data from the five-year version of the Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey and the Zillow Home Value Index for 2024.
A December 2023 Zillow report found that to comfortably afford rent in Seattle, a household would need to earn $89,000 a year. Seattle's average rent, $2,186, was well over the national average of $1,982 per month.
The five states with the most ZIP codes included on the list were California (190), New Jersey (111), New York (95), Massachusetts (79) and Florida (57).
