5-alarm fire destroys old Red Lion hotel in Jantzen Beach

A five-alarm fire destroyed a hotel on the Columbia River early Sunday morning. The old hotel, vacant since 2005, sits on the west side of the I-5 bridge in Jantzen Beach.

PORTLAND -- A five-alarm fire destroyed the Thunderbird On The River, formerly the Red Lion hotel on on the west side of the Interstate 5 bridge in Jantzen Beach. The hotel on the east side is reportedly not affected, authorities said.

The blaze broke out shortly before 3 a.m., and crews arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of the western side of the complex. Firefighters called the incident to five alarms at around 4 a.m. with more than 200 crew members working to control the blaze.

Three of the six units are a total loss and a fourth unit is still burning. It's expected to be a total loss and smolder for several days. The hotel has been vacant since 2005.

There are no reports of any injuries, but emergency crews are making efforts to keep people out of the buildings.

The freeway was affected for a few hours overnight because of its proximity to the fire.
