Caravan celebrates WWII vet's 103rd birthday

Social distancing didn't stop friends and family from celebrating Gene Moy's birthday. They threw him a surprise parade on Beacon Hill.

SEATTLE — A very special celebration caravan rolled through Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood on Wednesday. Family, friends and fans loaded up their cars with love and banners to honor the birthday boy.

Gene Moy celebrated his 103rd birthday on Wednesday.

Gene is a familiar face to KING 5 viewers. We were lucky enough to witness his 102nd birthday last spring. That party was at the local senior center where Gene is known for his dancing.

Gene usually dances twice a week, and Wednesday would have been one of the days that he would be on the dance floor.

But this year is different. The area's coronavirus situation has meant that Gene has been stuck at home. So his family decided to surprise him with a caravan of well-wishers.

Gene’s dance partner Cari and his son Corey organized the effort on what would otherwise be a historic birthday.

He's also had to postpone receiving a very special honor. Gene is one of a dwindling population of Chinese American World War II Veterans and he was to awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor in Washington DC later this month.

That ceremony now is on hold now but Gene’s son Corey Moy says it’s of little concern to his dad.

“He said that’s too far to travel anyways,” Corey Moy said.

Gene represents a generation that doesn’t seem to want accolades.

“I was just doing what we all did,” he said.

Nonetheless, his many friends insisted in surprising him with a caravan of smiles on his birthday.
