Family, friends of 80-year-old woman killed in Seattle carjacking pay respects at growing memorial

"We all love her. Everybody loved her, and I know she is looking down,” said Melanie Roberts, Ruth Dalton’s granddaughter.

SEATTLE — In Seattle's Madison Valley neighborhood, people are sharing so many memories about Ruth Dalton, a beloved neighborhood dog walker.

"We all love her. Everybody loved her, and I know she is looking down,” said Melanie Roberts, Dalton’s granddaughter.

One day after a deadly carjacking claimed Dalton’s life, community members stopped in the neighborhood where it happened to pay their respects.

"Just a horrendous crime,” Pam Newcomer said.

"I heard two very loud screams,” said John Ayala.

A Ring camera captured the chaotic moments, showing people like Ayala rushing to Ruth's side.

"When I got to her, she was still breathing,” said Ayala. "I did what I could to try and help resuscitate her, but things were just too far gone."

Roberts was able to thank Ayala today.

"To know that somebody who cared, even a stranger, was with her, it is comforting,” said Roberts.

Hours after Tuesday's carjacking, more than five miles away from where it happened, police found Ruth's vehicle and the lifeless body of her dog, Prince.

"Her little dog went the same day she did. They're together, and I am thankful and grateful for that,” Roberts said.

Back on this block, they're remembering Ruth.

"In January of 1997, she walked into my floral studio,” said Nisha Klein“That unconditional love that dogs give, that’s what Ruth was.”

Dalton started her dog-walking business, Grandma's Critter Care, nearly 35 years ago.

"I just was moved by it, and I wanted to come and lay flowers for her,” said Newcomer.

"She will be missed by a lot of people,” said Roberts.

A 48-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday morning in connection to the crime, according to the Seattle Police Department.
