21-year-old man arrested for reported random murder of rideshare driver in Edmonds

The man was taken into custody on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. for the murder on Jan. 3.

EDMONDS, Wash. — A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection to the murder of a rideshare driver in Edmonds.

According to the Edmonds Police Department, the man was taken into custody at 2:30 p.m. He was booked into Snohomish County Jail for second-degree murder.

Abdikadir Shariif, 31, was killed in his car near 236th Street Southwest and Edmonds Way on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The shooting happened just after 10:15 p.m. Police said Shariif was making a left-hand turn, and he “intersected” with the suspect. Police said there was no “obvious altercation” between Shariif and the suspect. Witnesses told police that they saw the suspect, who was on foot, fire several shots into the vehicle.

Shariif was taken to the hospital, where he died.

"[Thanks] to Edmonds Police Department for doing their job and finding this culprit and holding him to the fullest extent of the law," Mohamed Shariif, Abdikadir's brother, said.

The Seattle Rideshare Driver’s Association said he’s been a driver since 2015 and a member since 2018.

Shariif’s family and faith community are mourning his loss.

“It's very devastating. The father is in shock. When we talked to him, it was really a big shock, losing his son. He was a man who always volunteered at the mosque, and in fact, he used to love feeding birds at the mosque,” Mumin said.

Mumin said Shariif was on the clock for Uber when the shooting happened.

“He was a very great man, very well loved and respected in the community,” said Ahmed Mumin, executive director of the Seattle Rideshare Driver’s Association.

Edmonds police say the investigation is still ongoing.
