AUBURN, Wash. -- A suspected bank robber was shot after exchanging gunfire with a police officer in Auburn Wednesday.
Auburn police say the robbery happened around noon at the KeyBank at 101 E. Main Street.
The suspect jumped in a getaway car with a woman behind the wheel. They got as far as 2nd Avenue and D Street SE where he encountered a bicycle officer. Police say the suspect got out of the car and fired at the officer, who then fired back.
Neighbors say they heard three shots.
The suspect was hit and went down in an alley between D Street and Main Street. It's unclear at this point whether he was shot by a police officer or if it was self-inflicted.
Officials say he was alive and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was listed in critical condition.
The bicycle officer was not injured. Police found at least one bullet hole in the front window of a nearby home.
Police took the female driver into custody.
The bicycle officer will be placed on paid administrative leave, as a team of investigators from outside the department investigate the shooting.
