BELLEVUE, Wash. — A Bellevue Police Department officer shot and killed a person on Tuesday night outside of the LA Fitness gym, according to a news release.
Around 6:35 p.m., officers responded to the parking lot of the Kelsey Creek Shopping Center near the 14900 block of Main Street in Bellevue for a report of a man walking around with a knife, police said.
According to police, at least one officer made contact with the man, who was reported to be 44 years old. At some point, the man reportedly advanced toward the officer with a knife in his hand. The officer fired his weapon, striking the man, police said.
The King County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Joseph Agada Ejeh and said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
First aid and CPR were administered by officers and the fire department was called to respond.
Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
KING 5 spoke with a witness who said a man entered the gym with a knife and that the gym manager then called the police.
The King County Independent Force Investigation Team (KC IFIT) is investigating.
The Bellevue police officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
