Capitol Hill light rail station stabbing suspect charged with murder

Shawn Patrick Moore is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of intimidating a witness.

SEATTLE — The man accused of a fatal stabbing of another man following an altercation at the Capitol Hill light rail station in Seattle was charged with murder Thursday.

Shawn Patrick Moore, 26, is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of intimidating a witness. Moore waived his first court appearance on Tuesday. He is being held on a $3 million bail.

According to court documents, the fight on Saturday started because Moore didn't like the way the victim "brushed by him when walking down the escalator" at the light rail station.

The incident was captured by security cameras.

According to court documents, Moore confronted the victim, 37-year-old Corey Bellett, on the train platform. Within seconds, Moore and the victim begin to push and slap each other. Soon after the fight started, Moore can be seen reaching into his pocket. He pulled out what police believe was a knife and appeared to stab the victim multiple times.

Footage shows Bellett tried to get away but fell off the platform onto the train tracks. When Moore fled, Bellett was able to climb back on the platform and get help from people nearby. Bellett was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy conducted by the King County Medical Examiner's Office showed Bellett suffered three stab wounds to his neck, torso and arm.

The documents said rather than leaving the scene immediately he sought out someone he knew, a witness to the earlier altercation, to reportedly tell him not to say anything to police.

Moore was taken into custody on Monday afternoon, two days after the stabbing. He was found at a home in Eatonville.

In court Tuesday, the victim's mother urged the judge to set bail as high as possible.

"We are very concerned that this particular person could end up harming somebody else," Bellett's mother told the judge. "It seems like a very vicious attack."
