Family members of victim killed in light rail stabbing speak out against suspect in court

According to court documents, the fight on May 11 started because the suspect did not like the way the victim "brushed by him when walking down the escalator."

SEATTLE — The man accused of a fatal stabbing of another man following an altercation at the Capitol Hill light rail station in Seattle was arraigned on charges in court Wednesday.

Shawn Patrick Moore, 26, is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of intimidating a witness. Moore is being held on a $3 million bail.

According to court documents, the fight on May 11 started because Moore did not like the way the victim "brushed by him when walking down the escalator" at the light rail station.

The incident was captured by security cameras.

According to court documents, Moore confronted the victim, Corey Bellett, 37, on the train platform. Within seconds, Moore and the victim begin to push and slap each other. Soon after the fight started, Moore can be seen reaching into his pocket. He pulled out what police believe was a knife and appeared to stab the victim multiple times.

Footage showed Bellett tried to get away but fell off the platform onto the train tracks. When Moore fled, Bellett climbed back on the platform and got help from people nearby. Bellett was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

In court Wednesday Bellett's wife, Bridget, spoke out against the suspect accused in her husband's death.

Bridge married Corey on Dec. 27, 2023, less than five months before the deadly stabbing.

"This has shook the entire community," Bridget Bellett said. "Corey was a huge part of the community. He worked hard. He kept his head down and he lost his life for a small altercation. Of course they say words were said but that isn’t cause for death. That doesn’t mean you react in the way that you did. I’m afraid that (Moore) might leave because that is an option for him, and I don’t want to lose the justice for Corey. He deserves that. Someone needs to pay. And he needs to pay."

An autopsy conducted by the King County Medical Examiner's Office showed Bellett suffered three stab wounds to his neck, torso and arm.

The documents said rather than leaving the scene immediately Moore sought out someone he knew, a witness to the earlier altercation, to reportedly tell him not to say anything to police.

Moore was taken into custody two days after the stabbing. He was found at a home in Eatonville.

Corey Bellett's father, Dennis, said in court Moore's $3 million bail wasn't high enough given the accusations.

"This is not self defense," Dennis Martin Bellett said. "That is a heinous criminal act. I actually think $3 million is too low. It should be $5 (million). This man has no business in the community. He made a decision to kill my son. He needs to be held accountable."

If Moore posts the $3 million bail, prosecutors requested Wednesday he is put on electronic home detention with GPS monitoring.

"Not only was my son murdered, he murdered his family," Dennis Martin Bellett said. "My wife, my daughter in law, his mother, brother, sisters, aunts and uncles. There were over 300 people at his memorial. This is a testament to his character. And the fact that this occurred for name calling. It’s not right. He deserves justice. He was a good man.”
