ISLAND COUNTY, Wash. — A 32-year-old Freeland man is in custody for suspicion of murder after he turned himself in with blood on his hands and told authorities he assaulted his mother, according to the Island County Sheriff's Office (ICSO).
ICSO said the man called 911 on Friday just before 11 a.m. and said he had committed a crime and wanted to report it. ICSO deputies made contact with the man who was walking around in the 5500 block of Cameron Rd.
Deputies said the man appeared to have dried blood on his hands and blood stains on his pants. ICSO said the man told deputies he lived a short distance away with his parents. He reportedly told the deputies his mother was dead.
ICSO said the man described how he assaulted his mother, the injuries inflicted and where he placed the weapons he used.
Deputies responded to the man's residence in the 5500 block of Myrtle Ave. and knocked on the door to no response. ICSO said the deputies entered the trailer and found a woman lying on the floor with blood on the right side of her neck. Deputies reportedly began CPR and EMS responded but the woman did not survive her injuries.
The man was booked into the Island County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. An initial court appearance is scheduled for Saturday. Criminal charges are expected to be filed early next week.
The victim's name is not being released pending family notification, according to ICSO.
