SEATTLE — A former Kent resident who targeted clients of a methadone clinic in Seattle for the sale of fentanyl was sentenced to a federal prison Monday.

Mohamed Aweys Muse, 37, was arrested in March 2023 after getting on the radar of law enforcement in late 2022. The release from the U.S. Attorney's Office says records in the case show Muse was observed leaving a Kent apartment and selling fentanyl in the area of Airport Way South and South Holgate Street. There is a methadone clinic just a block away, according to the release.

“Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous drug that has been ravaging our community… I am particularly concerned with the targeting of a methadone clinic,” U.S. District Judge John H. Chun said at Monday's sentencing hearing.

On Feb. 2, 2023, search warrants were served on Kent and Lynnwood apartments of Muse. Fentanyl, cocaine and three firearms were found at the Lynnwood residence, while the Kent apartment yielded more cocaine.

Muse was sentenced to almost 2.5 years (30 months) and three years of supervised release after he is out.

“Muse regularly sold fentanyl in hand-to-hand transactions near a methadone clinic, targeting vulnerable individuals struggling to treat their addictions. This makes his drug trafficking particularly egregious and in reckless disregard for the safety of others,” prosecutors wrote to the court in asking for the three-year sentence.
