KENT, Wash. — Officers with the Fife Police Department shot at a murder suspect before arresting him Thursday afternoon.
According to FPD Chief Pete Fisher, officers learned that the man wanted in connection to a fatal September shooting was at a Kent hotel.
A warrant was issued Nov. 21 for the arrest of Andrew Lautogia Fonoti, 28, in the death of Rudolph King III, 23, an active-duty commissioned officer with the Army National Guard.
According to Fisher, the FPD SWAT team was deployed to make the arrest. During the arrest, two shots were fired by officers, but no one was hit. Police say it is unclear if the suspect had a gun or any weapons.
The suspect is now in custody.
On Sept. 12, Fife Police Department officers responded at 9:32 p.m. to what was originally believed to be a single-car crash near 20th Street East and 70th Avenue East. It was then discovered that King was shot in the head and likely died instantly.
Recently released surveillance camera footage showed the moments that led up to the shooting.
The videos show the suspect driving fast and erratically and even passing the victim's car aggressively near the Interstate 5 exit in Fife. Police say Fonoti shot at King, then turned around and left the scene.
Police also received reports that Fonoti admitted to others to killing King for "driving really close" to his car.
Fonoti was charged on Nov. 21 with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, drive-by shooting, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
The Kent Police Department will be investigating the officer-involved shooting.
