Man shoots estranged wife's new boyfriend after high-speed chase in Kitsap County, deputies say

When a sheriff's deputy arrived, the victim of the shooting had the suspect in a headlock despite having been shot in the abdomen.

KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. — A domestic situation spiraled out of control over the weekend in Kitsap County, as a man allegedly shot his estranged wife's new boyfriend in the abdomen following a high-speed chase and car crash.

Dana Joseph McDonald was charged with two counts of attempted murder, drive-by shooting and reckless endangerment on Monday by Kitsap County prosecutors.

A 21-year-old man and his 31-year-old girlfriend were near the Kitsap County Fairgrounds on the evening of Oct. 12, where the woman was meeting her husband, identified as McDonald in court documents, so he could pick up the couple's 8-year-old son after a visit.

Officials said when the woman and her boyfriend were leaving, McDonald drove by and began shooting at the couple. The woman and her boyfriend tried to drive away, but deputies said McDonald chased after them in his car and continued shooting. The eight-year-old boy was in McDonald's car as he was chasing and shooting at the other vehicle, court documents say.

Eventually, McDonald passed the other vehicle on the road, made a U-turn and smashed into his wife and her boyfriend head-on, deputies said. McDonald and the boyfriend exited their vehicles and began yelling at each other, before the husband pulled a handgun and shot the boyfriend in the abdomen.

The wife then got out of the car, and "the three of them began fighting in the street." The gun was eventually kicked away and was guarded by a witness to the fight. The two men eventually began fighting in a ditch, and when a Kitsap County deputy arrived, they found the boyfriend holding the husband down in a headlock in the ditch.

The boyfriend was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center to treat his gunshot wound. McDonald was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the Kitsap County Jail.

Bail was set at $5 million in McDonald's first appearance in court Monday. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 9 a.m.

The woman and the child were not injured, per Kitsap County deputies.
