Milton police officer sustains life-threatening injuries while trying to arrest suspect

Officer Haney, a five-year veteran of the department, and another officer were trying to arrest a suspect for an outstanding drug warrant June 19.

MILTON, Wash — A Milton police officer sustained what are being called "serious life-threatening injuries" after he was dragged by a suspect's vehicle while trying to make an arrest on Wednesday, June 19.

Officer Erik Haney, a five-year veteran of the department, and another officer were trying to arrest a suspect for an outstanding drug warrant near the 400 block of Meridian Avenue East.

Haney suffered injuries to his legs and hands when the suspect attempted to flee. Haney was dragged through a parking lot and run over, according to the police department.

Haney was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing surgery.

The second officer was not injured and rendered aid to Haney until the fire department arrived.

The suspect, known by the Milton Police Department for previous incidents, was later taken into custody by the Kent Police Department. The suspect was booked into Pierce County Jail on charges that include felony assault and resisting arrest.

According to police, drugs and a fake gun were found in the vehicle.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Haney and his family during this difficult time.” Police Chief Tony Hernandez said in a prepared statement. "This incident underscores the bravery of our officers and all law enforcement officers and their willingness to confront danger to protect and serve our community."
