SEATAC, Wash. — A 33-year-old woman who allegedly physically abused her 2-year-old child on a flight from Mexico to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was ordered detained in U.S. District Court on Monday.
Breanna Mistler of Sacramento, California faces a misdemeanor assault charge after witnesses told police they saw her kick the child and shake it like a "ragdoll."
According to a criminal complaint, Mistler was on a flight from Puerta Vallarta, Mexico to Seattle on May 1. A witness told police they saw Mistler kick the child after the child woke Mistler up during the flight.
A witness also told police Mistler shook the child like a "ragdoll."
When a passenger confronted Mistler about it, Mistler allegedly told them to mind their business.
When the flight landed, Mistler was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A law enforcement officer noted the child had what "looked like recent bruises to an eye, cheek, shoulder and forearm," according to the criminal complaint.
A Customs officer who escorted Mistler from the gate reported that she told them she spanked the child and the bruises were caused by a dog a week prior.
A Port of Seattle officer who was standing near Mistler while she was being detained said they heard Mistler say she wanted to call her mother; however, Mistler added, "she would laugh because her mother had said something to the effect of 'wait until someone sees you do this in public.'"
Mistler's next hearing is scheduled for May 16.
