Suspect dead after exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in Spanaway

The suspect first shot at Washington State Patrol troopers when they pulled over a separate car for a traffic stop before leading law enforcement on a car chase.

SPANAWAY, Wash — A suspect is dead after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement in Spanaway Tuesday, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department (PCSD).

The incident began when the suspect fired shots at Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers who tried to pull a car over on Highway 512 around 10 a.m.

The suspect led the WSP and other agencies who responded on a short car chase to the area of Sixth Avenue and 205th Street

Once the suspect and law enforcement arrived in the neighborhood, the suspect fired more shots at law enforcement, who returned fire.

Janssen Olson, who lives a block away from where the shooting happened, said he was at home trying to feed his children when he heard what he thought was fireworks. He went outside and heard the gunshots.

"I look to the left and I see [law enforcement] posted up on my neighbor's cars with their rifles, taking shots," he said.

Olson captured nearly two minutes of the shootout from upstairs in his home. In the video, at least 29 gunshots can be heard.

"I could just tell he had probably already been hit," Olson said. "I see him take several shots at the officers."

PCSD spokesperson Darren Moss said Pierce County deputies and state troopers were involved in the shooting. It's unclear how many officers fired their weapons.

No officers were injured.

The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is handling the case.
