Man killed at Maple Valley apartment complex

A 911 caller reported that shots were fired at around 11:35 p.m. Tuesday night.

MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. — A man was killed at an apartment complex in Maple Valley on Tuesday.

The King County Sheriff's Office and Maple Valley Police Department responded to the 22400 block of Southeast 240th Street at around 11:35 p.m. Tuesday night after receiving a report that shots were fired in the area. When officers arrived at the complex, they found a victim who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Jesse Lee Kandel, 41. While police said they responded to a reported shooting on Wednesday, the medical examiner said Kandel died from multiple sharp force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

Kandel lived at the apartment complex.

“Things never happen like this,” said Corey Harrell, who lives at the complex. “I really feel bad for the person that died at the crime scene here.”

Police have not been able to locate a suspect.

“It's a shame it happened,” said Daryl Ruud, who lives down the street from the complex. “They're going to eventually get caught, but I hope they get them as soon as possible.”

Residents at the apartment complex reported seeing a K9 search underway in the surrounding area. Residents said they could not get back to their apartments for hours.

“I was wondering what happened, I was looking around trying to get answers,” said Aviahna Harrell, who lives at the complex. “Obviously, it was something serious.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the King County Sheriff's Office at 206-263-2090 or email mcutips@kingcounty.gov.
