One person stabbed at Tukwila light rail station

Trains were running as scheduled through the Tukwila light rail station Friday afternoon after an overnight stabbing sent one person to the hospital.

TUKWILA, Wash. — Sound transit is beefing up security after a person was injured in a stabbing early this morning at the Tukwila International Boulevard station – one stop north of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Trains were running as scheduled through the Tukwila light rail station Friday afternoon after an overnight stabbing sent one person to the hospital.

“I mean it’s tragic, that’s very sad,” light rail rider LeAane Campbell said.

According to Sound Transit, one person stabbed another after an altercation just after 1 a.m. Friday. Tukwila police responded, and one person was taken to the hospital – investigators have yet to say if anyone was taken into custody.

“This, to be able to go and not worry about downtown traffic and to be able to get to the airport so easily … I’ll keep taking it unless it’s something that they think they can’t get a handle on,” Campbell said.

A spokesperson for Sound Transit said they’ve doubled the on-site security presence since 2022 and insist riding transit “remains very safe” – though the system is not immune to violence.

In May of this year, a 37-year-old chef was stabbed an killed by a stranger on a Capitol Hill train platform. The suspected killer was arrested and later charged with murder.

Last July, near the Othello Station, passengers came to the defense of a man being stabbed in an act prosecutors would later call violent and random. The victim ultimately survived the attack.

According to Sound Transit, there were 256 assaults on customers over eight months ending in February. In that same time frame, there were more than 2 million rides per month.
