FREDERICKSON, Wash. — A 26-year-old is facing possible vehicular homicide charges after her mother was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Fredrickson, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
PCSD deputies and firefighters responded to a three-car collision in the 5600 block of 176th St E in Fredrickson at around 5:42 p.m. Wednesday.
PCSD said a white Subaru was driving at a high rate of speed and ran a red light on 70th Avenue E. A pickup truck making a legal U-turn at a green light struck the driver's side of the Subaru. A white van following the Subaru also struck the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The driver of the white van that fled the scene reported he was chasing the Subaru because it was his and was stolen. PCSD said deputies asked the caller to return to the scene but he never did. The man reportedly later told deputies the van he was driving was stolen and couldn't return to the scene.
According to PCSD, the driver of the Subaru, a 26-year-old woman, was seriously injured and transported to the hospital. The woman's mother, 64, was a rear passenger and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver is facing possible vehicle homicide. This would mark the department's first homicide of the year.
The driver of the pickup truck and his two-year-old child were uninjured.
A family member of the Subaru driver told deputies the woman had been driving the vehicle for a few weeks and claimed it wasn't stolen. The woman and the vehicle's registered owner reportedly had an argument leading up to the incident.
Deputies are still searching for the driver of the white van. He is facing felony hit-and-run charges.
