Kent officers shoot at driver of stolen U-Haul

The suspect was uninjured and has been booked into the King County jail on multiple charges.

SEATAC, Wash. — A police chase with the driver of a stolen U-Haul van ended in a shooting at a SeaTac apartment complex overnight.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a Kent police officer spotted a stolen U-Haul headed westbound on West Meeker Street. Officers signaled for the truck to pull over but the driver didn't stop.

Officers followed the truck toward the west hill of Kent, where they successfully deployed spike strips. Despite this, the suspect kept driving until reaching an apartment complex on the 37000 block of South 182nd Street in SeaTac. The suspect then drove the truck around to the back of the apartment building, over broken glass and through a fence, before hitting a tree and a retaining wall and coming to a stop.

A short time later, officers advised that shots had been fired over dispatch radio. There is no information about what prompted the shooting.

Two Kent police officers fired at the suspect but neither of them hit him, according to preliminary information from KPD.

The suspect, a 19-year-old man out of Seattle, was arrested and booked for charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and eluding police.

The officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure. The Valley Independent Investigation Team has been called in to conduct an independent investigation.

The King County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they also helped respond to the incident. While one deputy was responding, he got into a collision with another driver, and both sustained minor injuries.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
