PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Evidence released by the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office point to why a man allegedly killed his girlfriend in their Port Orchard apartment after an argument late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
David Kalac, 33, was arrested Wednesday outside of Portland, Ore., after he turned himself in to officers on patrol at a transit station. He was extradited to Washington Thursday and appeared in court Friday.
According to probably cause documents, Kalac handed arresting deputies a note that read, "I killed Amber Coplin. I strangled her with my hands, then a shoelace. I had no reason other than I was drunk and she pissed me off. Running from the cops was fun."
The note was signed DK and detectives say the ink color and style of writing are consistent with messages left at the scene. Kalac is believed to have left these messages, as well as posts online that included pictures of the victim and discussed the murder, according to detectives.
Kalac will be charged with first degree murder, according to an amendment filed by the Kitsap County Prosecutor.
On Friday, a Kitsap County Superior Court judge ordered Kalac held on $2 million in bail. If he is released on bail, Kalac cannot have any contact with Coplin's family.
The charge carries with it a maximum penalty of life in prison. Kalac had previously been charged with the second degree murder of Amber Coplin, 30.
He faces two other charges, including one count of domestic violence.
Evidence released by the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office show that one of the online posts indicated that Kalac believed Coplin was cheating on him. In it, he called their relationship "was rocky at best."
Coplin was found dead in their apartment Tuesday afternoon by her 13-year-old son. According to the coroner she was strangled and beaten.
On Saturday at 6 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil for Coplin on the marina in downtown Port Orchard, and on Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. there will be a benefit concert for her five sons. The concert will be held at the Slaughter County Brewing Company, 1307 Bay St, Port Orchard, WA 98366.
