Redmond High School counselor arrested for inappropriate relationship with student

Derik Detweiler, 35, was arrested by local authorities in Wyoming on Thursday and will be extradited to Washington state.

REDMOND, Wash. — A Redmond High School counselor was arrested in Wyoming Thursday and has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor.

According to the Redmond Police Department, a 17-year-old student told Lake Washington School District staff last week about a romantic relationship they had with a counselor.

The Lake Washington School District placed Derik Detweiler, 35, of Kenmore on administrative leave on May 22 and notified Redmond police.

“Lake Washington School District takes the protection of students very seriously,” Superintendent Jon Holmen said in a statement. “At this time, we will make no further comment out of respect for student confidentiality and the integrity of the investigative process. Student health, safety, and welfare remain LWSD’s paramount concern throughout this process. LWSD will continue to take appropriate actions to fulfill that goal.”

Detweiler was arrested by local authorities in Wyoming on Thursday and will be extradited to Washington state.

Detweiler is facing charges of communication with a minor for immoral purposes, sexual misconduct with a minor in the second degree, and furnishing liquor to a minor.

Detweiler's next court appearance is scheduled for June 13.

“We are thankful to the student for having the courage to come forward, as this relationship likely would have continued,” said Police Chief Darrell Lowe. “We encourage parents to have conversations with their children that if they hear or see something concerning, they should tell a trusted adult immediately. We also remind parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and report anything suspicious.”

Redmond police said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the case — or if there are additional victims — they should contact the Redmond Police Department at 425-556-2500.
