EVERETT, Wash. — More details were released about a shooting that turned into a police chase and spiraled out of control along I-5.
Two people died in the incident and a woman was injured. Police said all three people involved knew each other.
"I think it's scary,” Carol Vanderwoude said. “Casino Road has always had a bit of a reputation, but it seems to be getting worse."
Vanderwoude has lived along the busy south Everett road for nearly 30 years. She believes there have been more bad actors coming in daily to take part in illegal activity.
"I don't know if they have a gun," Vanderwoude said. "I don't know if they have knife. I have no idea, but this is not a safe area."
One man was shot Sunday, and a woman was injured at the Park View Apartment complex, off Casino Road. Police said officers found the suspect's vehicle, tried to stop him, and heard a gunshot in his car.
Investigators said autopsies show the man shot at the apartment died by homicide, and the suspect's death in the car was a suicide. They said the shooting occurred as the result of a domestic dispute and both the victim and suspect were 18.
"Talk to people and they're kind of afraid to walk on Casino Road,” Orlando Rivera said. “Walk to here, to some of the apartments."
Rivera is another person who has lived along Casino Road for more than a decade. He shared the same sentiments as others who believe crime is on the rise.
“All these kinds of problems, all these kinds of shootings, people might start leaving soon," Rivera said.
In the past year, KING 5 has reported on at least three other shootings along Casino Road. One man was killed in one of those shootings.
"Are there enough police?" Vanderwoude said. "Are there enough, to really cover all the areas because I have a feeling that there isn't."
The Everett Police Department (EPD) said it currently has 196 officers, with 28 vacancies it's hoping to fill.
EPD said to address safety concerns it's implemented emphasis patrols along Casino Road and has secured funding to deploy 71 auto license recognition cameras throughout the city to help police catch vehicles associated with crimes.
Police have not released the names of the suspect or victim from Sunday’s incident, but said the 19-year-old woman is doing okay. She's been released from the hospital.
