SEATTLE — Seattle police confirmed in a press conference Monday they arrested a suspect accused of killing one person and injuring two others in a shooting inside the Westlake Link light rail station.
Seattle police said officers responded to the 300 block of Pine Street around 9:20 p.m. Friday and quickly made their way to the station where they found three men with gunshot wounds. Two of the men had life-threatening injuries, police said.
The Seattle Fire Department transported the three victims to Harborview Medical Center. One of the victims died at the hospital from their injuries.
Witnesses told police one male suspect ran from the scene after the shooting. Witnesses also said the suspect and at least two of the victims may have had an altercation near 3rd and Pine before entering the Westlake station where the shooting happened.
Seattle detectives released surveillance video from the shooting Saturday afternoon, which quickly led to numerous tips coming in.
Seattle police said at a press conference Monday evening discussing the arrest that the suspect is well-known to local law enforcement.
“Thankfully our partners in Bellevue recognized the suspect who they were very familiar with and provided us with some information and then helped us track that suspect down today,” said Seattle Police Assistant Chief Nollette.
Police did not release the identity of the suspect, and only said he is a man in his 20s who was living on the eastside.
Police do not believe the shooting was random, and that one or more of the victims were targeted.
Assistant Chief Nollette said Seattle police take any act of violence seriously, but especially when it happens in such a populated area.
“We take any sort of homicide incredibly seriously or any assault or any shots fired, but something like that happening in the downtown core is completely unacceptable," said Nollette. "We were fortunate that there were surveillances tools at our disposal where we could identify this suspect quickly and get him into custody before someone else was injured."
