SEATTLE — A lockdown at Nova High School and shelter-in-place order at Garfield High School are lifted following a shooting Thursday afternoon.
Seattle police initially reported Garfield High School was also locked down. The school was in shelter-in-place out of an abundance of caution.
Around 1:45 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call along East Cherry Street for reports of six or seven gunshots near Nova High School.
Employees reported one bullet went through a second-story window of the school.
No injuries were reported.
Two vehicles were seen fleeing the area and it is believed the occupants were firing at one another.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting are unknown.
"Today’s shooting outside Nova High School is yet another reminder of the senseless gun violence that is too common in our city," a statement from Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell reads, in part. "While we are fortunate that no one was hurt, these acts of violence are unacceptable, and our hearts go out to the students, teachers, and staff who experienced this and to all families and neighbors impacted."
Harrell went on to note that his proposed budget includes expanding technology investments in the area to reduce violence. That includes CCTV and a real-time crime center to help police better respond to gun violence.
“Every person in the Central District, in District 3, and in every neighborhood across Seattle deserves to be safe and to feel safe, and we remain committed to making the right investments and enacting the right policies to support this mission and end the scourge of gun violence,” Harrell's statement continues.
Dr. Brent Jones, Seattle Public Schools superintendent, praised Harrell's efforts to expand technology to reduce gun violence.
